About

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1906 the Mater has evolved from a small cottage hospital, caring for women and children, to a world class facility. Bringing the healing ministry of Christ to all it serves, the Mater cares for the sick regardless of race, colour or creed. Most agree that there is something special about the Mater and the care it provides.

Today the Mater Hospital is part of St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney, the New South Wales division of St Vincent’s Health Australia, one of Australia’s leading Catholic not-for-profit healthcare providers.

The Mater Hospital is a leading private hospital. Among the various speciality units in the 216-bed hospital are intensive care, two 30-bed orthopaedic wards and a large maternity unit. Core specialities include obstetrics; orthopaedics including hip and knee joint replacements, bone and sports injuries; heart, lung and vascular medicine; cancer care and surgery; ear, nose and throat surgery; urology; endocrine surgery and neurosurgery.

Allied health services at the Mater include physiotherapy, pathology, radiology, pharmacy, nutritional services, medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology.

Research & Education

In fostering a culture of excellence the Mater Hospital is a centre for education and research. Continually pushing the boundaries of healthcare and improving patient outcomes we conduct a wide range of research projects, particularly in the areas of cancer and orthopaedics.

Committed to the ongoing training and development of healthcare professionals, within a values based organisation, the Mater  maintains close affiliations with the University of Sydney and the University of Notre Dame as well as several other tertiary institutions for medical, nursing and allied health education.

The work of the Mater is supported by donations from individuals, community groups and organisations such as The Friends of the Mater Foundation and The Mater Lives Committee. This assistance not only provides modern clinical environments and state-of-the-art medical equipment, it also helps the Mater attract and retain some of the country's best healthcare professionals.

Mission & Values

In line with the mission and values of the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Charity, the Mater is involved in several community programs to help the disadvantaged.

But what makes the Mater truly special is our uniquely compassionate and caring culture that gives individual attention to patients' needs for healing mind, body and spirit.
