Clinical governance emphasises the importance of overseeing clinical safety and quality with the same rigor as applied to corporate governance. It provides the systems whereby clinicians and managers are accountable for the quality of patient care and involves a partnership between clinicians, managers and patients. Clinical governance includes concepts such as quality and safety and continuous improvement.
At the Mater the following elements are at the centre of clinical governance:
- Accreditation - ensuring clinicians are adequately registered, qualified, experienced and are practicing within their conditions and scope of practice.
- Systems – establishing adequate policies and procedures that can be followed by staff.
- Culture – a culture of compliance.
- Continuous education.
- Ethics – our values give form to our activities and are at the core of our Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards.
