Giving life to mission, volunteers at the Mater Hospital have been collecting warm clothes and blankets for CAFAT patients undergoing radiotherapy at the hospital.
“Everyone who visits East Timor feels like they should be doing more,” explains Wayne Leathem, scrub nurse at the Mater Hospital. Earlier this year Wayne travelled to East Timor to compete in the Tour de Timor bicycle race. His second time in the country, Wayne was aware of St Vincent’s relationship with the Bario Pite Clinic and wanted to help in any way he could.
The Health Support Services Traineeship Program has proved hugely successful at St Vincent’s Private and the Mater Hospitals. Taking in four new trainees each year, the program offers employment and workplace training for people in the community who have been given Australian residency as they were identified as refugees.
