Children as patients

The Mater encourages parents to be fully involved in their child's care, as it helps children to feel more relaxed and understand what is happening to them. Parents are able to share their child's room for the duration of the hospital stay.

Arrangements can be made for parents to be with their child in the anaesthetic induction room and to be present in the recovery room after the operation. The nursing staff will guide you on what is required as the parent of a child having surgery.

Children should wear or bring a t-shirt or light pyjamas and a change of clothes to wear home. A favourite toy or teddy can be of great help!
