Intensive care

ICU

The Mater Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is committed to making a difference in the lives of our patients, relatives and colleagues through promoting a supportive, flexible and multidisciplinary approach. Our care is delivered with dignity, compassion, integrity and respect, to achieve optimal health outcomes through holistic, evidenced based practice.

The eight-bed unit is designed to treat patients who are either seriously ill, at risk of developing a serious complication, or are recovering from major surgery and specialises in cardiothoracic, vascular and advanced surgery.

The unit's team consists of skilled professionals from intensive care consultants and medical officers to nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists, speech pathologists and social workers. The team strives to improve a patient's condition as quickly as possible so it is safe for them to be transferred to a ward and cared for in a less intense environment.

The unit is supported by Hutchinson Ward, a 22-bed monitored step down unit. Despite its sophistication and technology, patients are always treated with respect, dignity and compassion.
