Family Rooms
Luxury Family Rooms are available for those eligible. The Family Rooms are designed to allow couples to stay together as a family unit, sharing the special moments of your baby's first few days.
There is an additional cost of $100.00 per night for the Family Room which is not refundable by health funds. This cost includes a double bed and all partner meals, including morning and afternoon tea and supper. Unfortunately the Family Rooms cannot be pre-booked, please speak to your midwife if you wish to stay in a Family Room.
Quality nursing care
We offer a high level of postnatal care with fully qualified, highly experienced midwives. Your midwife is there to offer advice on breastfeeding, caring for your newborn and postnatal care. We also offer specialised services including lactation specialists and a follow-up midwife to assist in the transition from hospital to home.
Lactation specialists
Lactation specialists offer professional assistance on your care and the baby's feeding technique.
Counselling services
Our concept of complete care embraces the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each person and a member of our pastoral services team is available at all times to assist you or your family.
Special care nursery
The Mater has a level two special care nursery with facilities for babies that require extra care, for example premature babies. Our special care nursery is supported by the latest technology, specialist paediatricians/neonatologists and neonatal intensive care trained staff.
High Tea
Every Monday and Friday, from 3.00pm to 4.00pm the Maternity Unit serves a High Tea in the Patient Lounge. This brings new parents and grandparents together to welcome their new baby into the world.
Maternity visiting hours
Visiting hours in the Maternity Unit are 3.00pm to 4.30pm and 6.30pm to 8.00pm. There is a daily rest period from 1.00pm until 3.00pm, during this time visitors are requested to not visit the unit.
Partners may visit at any reasonable time. Please ask friends and relatives to only visit in the above hours and not to telephone during the rest period. Only urgent calls can be put through during the rest period.
For their own comfort and that of other patients, visitors should refrain from visiting patients in hospital if they are not well.
Visiting children may not be admitted to the Maternity Unit if they have contagious conditions such as chicken pox. Visitors are requested to supervise their children for the comfort of other patients.
Patient and visitor lounge
The lounge provides a relaxing area for patients and their visitors, with extensive views from the city to Olympic Stadium and beyond.

'Last night' celebration
We offer you and your partner the opportunity to celebrate your family's new addition with a special 'last night' celebration dinner, knowing that your new baby will be safe and secure at the Mater.
Security
Mater maternity is a secure area of the hospital and is monitored by 24 hour video surveillance. Through the night hours the main doors of the Maternity Unit are only accessible by approved staff.
Telephone support
The Maternity Unit, in conjunction with Tresillian Family Care Centres, telephones all new mothers within the first few weeks of discharge. The purpose of the call is to determine and assist the well being of the mother and baby. In addition, the contact allows for a referral to other services and relevant support, if required.
Information about this service will be provided when you are in hospital. The telephone service is free, however some additional referrals may impose a cost, which will be discussed with you at the time of need.
Follow-up midwife
Our follow-up midwife assists with the transition from hospital to home providing telephone support and home visits when required.
